Pool chemicals are substances used to sanitize and balance the water in a swimming pool to ensure safe and comfortable swimming conditions. These chemicals include:

What Should My Pool Chemistry Be?

pH: 7.4 to 7.6
Alkalinity: 100 to 150 ppm
Calcium Hardness: 175 to 225 ppm and 225 to 275 ppm for plaster pools
Chlorine or Salt Water Pools: 1 to 3 ppm
Bromine Pools: 3 to 5 ppm
Biguanide Pools: 30 to 50 ppm
Mineral System Pools: 0.5 ppm of chlorine

It’s important to properly handle and store these chemicals, and to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and safety guidelines when using them in a pool.

Test the water regularly (at least once a week) using a test kit to determine the levels of chlorine, pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness. Adjust the levels as needed:

Chlorine should be kept at 1-3 ppm (parts per million).
pH should be between 7.2-7.8.
Alkalinity should be between 80-120 ppm.
Calcium hardness should be between 200-400 ppm.
Add chemicals as needed to maintain proper levels.
Circulate the pool water using the pump and filter.
Clean the pool regularly, including skimming leaves and other debris, brushing the walls and floor, and vacuuming the floor.
Shock the pool weekly (or as needed) by adding a high dose of chlorine to kill bacteria and other contaminants.
Add algaecide as needed to prevent algae growth.
Maintain proper water levels and add water as needed to replace water lost to evaporation and splash-out.
